At the center of the captivating rolling meadows, resided a shepherd boy. His existence was untarnished, and unsophisticated. His main role was mainly to look after his flock of here sheep.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales through the solo tree on the peak were his main associates. Day in day, looking out for his charges inculcated in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
But, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. During one such occasion from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty plan.
Tales of wild beasts preying on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One day he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but saw nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
